Back-to-School Timeline

Preparing your child for school should begin early to allow enough time for you to help the school staff learn more about hemophilia and help your child adjust to a new school environment. Follow this basic timeline to stay on track while planning and preparing for the school year:
Four Months Before School Starts:
- Make a preliminary visit to your child's school before the end of the previous school year and introduce yourself to the principal and the school nurse.
Two Months Before School Starts:
- Ask the school to schedule an informational conference during the next month with the principal, school nurse, and your child's teacher(s). Ask your treatment center nurse or social worker to accompany you and provide information about hemophilia and answer questions from school staff.
- Develop an individualized healthcare plan with your treatment center, physician, and school.
- Supply the school with emergency phone numbers and educational materials about hemophilia.
- Review education laws such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and if appropriate, request a 504 plan from your child's school. Section 504 provides for non-discrimination and equal access to educational opportunities for children with disabilities.
- In case your child has to miss school because of a bleed, find a tutor who can help to keep your child up in his schoolwork, if necessary.1
One Month Before School Starts:
- Hold the informational conference at the school with your treatment center nurse or social worker and school personnel to provide information about hemophilia and to answer any questions that school staff might have.
