Emergency Care

When trips to the emergency room are necessary, you want to make the process as smooth as possible.Advance preparation of your family and your ER can make visits easier on everyone. This section of thereforyou.com is filled with information about ways you can plan ahead and be prepared.
Before an emergency arises, you can start by learning how to recognize the signs of the type of injury or bleed that might require a trip to the ER. Then you can prepare by packing an ER bag with everything you might need, and having it ready to go at all times. Keeping your ER Checklist posted in a prominent place for last-minute checks can also help. The following section on Preparing for the ER can get you started.
Selecting an ER is another important way to prepare. If you have more than one ER available to you, determine which one is most familiar with treatment of patients with hemophilia. You can ask your HTC which facility is commonly used by other persons with bleeding disorders. If possible, schedule a pre-emergency appointment with ER physicians and staff to provide them with information about hemophilia treatment recommendations and share with them a copy of your Treatment Center Emergency Information Form. You can find useful suggestions from the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH), National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF), and the latest MASAC guidelines. Your treatment center nurse may be able to provide you with materials or even join you in this visit.
With all of this preparation complete, you and your family will be ready if the need for an ER visit does arise. You can double-check the ER checklist before you go, grab your ER bag, and proceed to the ER, which you have trained to meet your unique needs.
