Nutritional Suggestions
With a focus on food portions, MyPlate is based on the 2010 Dietary Guidelines, which were released in January 2011. As a general guide to eating right, MyPlate provides ten basic tips to help you make food choices for a healthy lifestyle:1
- Balance calories
- Enjoy your food, but eat less
- Avoid oversized portions
- Foods to eat MORE often: vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and fat-free or 1% milk or dairy products
- Make half your plate fruits & vegetables
- Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk
- Make half of your grains whole grains
- Foods to eat LESS often: foods high in solid fats, added sugars, and salt
- Compare sodium in foods
- Drink water instead of sugary drinks
